Mental Health

A decade ago most Riverland Wine members knew very little about mental health.  Most in our community were reluctant to talk about it and tended to push it aside as being something that only afflicted other people.  The difficult decade ushered in by an appalling oversupply of winegrapes and the nastiest drought in living memory, forced more of our members to understand that mental health issues can impact anyone, at almost anytime of life. It tends to advances stealthily and unpredictably. It’s often within us before we know it or it can be lurking among our own close family and friends, making their lives very difficult.

In its most extreme form and left without appropriate support it can take away lives. With early intervention however, most of us can come to recognise its sinister nature and learn how to overcome it, often permanently and get back to the good life.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness on mental health issues around the globe and mobilising efforts in support. All organisations such as Beyond Blue, Mensline and Lifeline are better resourced and much more accessible than was the case a decade ago but the real work starts with all of us. It’s so easy to stop and ask RUOK and listen to the response. That’s the simple most effective way to flush it out and open the escape hatch for Mental Health sufferers.

One of the best and easiest things you can do for someone who is struggling is to create the opportunity to talk about fears and anxieties. Take a few minutes to browse one or two of the case histories in this link.
