Are you fruit fly ready?

The Fruit Fly Simulation exercise hosted by Biosecurity SA at the Renmark Club last week highlighted the close working relationship between Riverland Wine and Vinehealth Australia resulting in both agencies being well prepared for any incidence of fruit fly in the region.

The simulation exercise brought together representatives from each area of primary production potentially affected by fruit fly to test the region’s response readiness to an outbreak of Queensland Fruit Fly and identify any gaps. It reinforced the need for everyone to be prepared.

In preparation for the exercise Vinehealth Australia produced a detailed map of the 1.5km and 15km mock detection zones showing each of the potentially affected vineyards and wineries. They also prepared a complete list of the quantities of each grape variety grown in the respective zones. The availability of this detailed information about crops and owners would enable contact to be made with all affected grape growers and wineries to ensure they had accurate information about the action they should take in the event of a fruit fly detection or outbreak.

Vinehealth Australia has also prepared an information sheet setting out what growers would have to do in the event of a fruit fly outbreak. The information sheet is available on the Riverland Wine website.
