Located in Barmera, Ricca Terra Farms specialises in grape varieties Nero d'Avola, Vermentino and Grillo, which are grape varieties native to Southern Italy.
For several years Ricca Terra Farms has been investigating and trialling the use of mulches in their vineyards to aid in soil moisture conservation and improving soil fertility. The catalyst for this trial was record high prices of water as a result of severe water restrictions caused by recent droughts.
Managing Director of Ricca Terra Farms, Ashley Ratcliff, said "the application of mulch to our vineyards has demonstrated that water can be saved through the use of mulch when applied under vines".
The mulch trial at Ricca Terra Farms employs the use of soil moisture monitoring equipment that can be accessed online. This allows other growers to compare water savings that can be achieved through the use of mulch. Ricca Terra Farms was recently awarded a Landcare grant to continue to research the benefits that mulch can bring to vineyards.
