Riverland & Mallee Mesonet Presentation
2 pm – 4 pm
What is a Mesonet? It’s a network of weather stations and we have one established in the Riverland and Mallee – providing accurate information to prevent crop damage from spray drift. The Mesonet network delivers a weather monitoring and warning system to provide highly accurate and targeted data on the development and presence of adverse conditions for spraying, as well as other measures with the information freely accessible to the public.
The Riverland and Mallee Mesonet network was built and designed by meteorologists and agriculturalists specifically to reduce and prevent agricultural pesticide spray drift. As of 2020, it is the only permanent network of 70 towers that measures and publicly displays Vertical Temperature Difference (10m-1m) to show the presence of thermal inversion. In addition, the Mesonet Team is working behind the scenes with key industry players to be familiar with the most up-to-date science and expected future policy directions.
Learn how to use this network to maintain records and determine that sprays will be applied in accordance with the label. See what it’s all about HERE
Are you Bogged Mate?
4 pm – 5 pm
If you’re feeling bogged or you’re trying to pull out a mate who’s stuck in the mud, we can get you connected with the right help.
Country blokes are facing challenges like never before but it doesn’t mean you need to get stuck in the mud. There are plenty of places to go to get a tow and it takes guts to admit you’re bogged.
Are you bogged mate? aims to boost awareness and start a conversation with the broader community about the rising issue of depression and suicide rates among men in rural areas. We are confronting the challenges that rural men face on a daily basis, talking about mental health, and lighting the path to support.
Mary O’Brien – The Ideas Woman
Mary O’Brien is a passionate advocate for all sectors of Australian agriculture. She was born and raised at Bollon in Southwest Qld and her career in the rural sector has given her a deep respect for country blokes, and more importantly, the ability to effectively communicate with them. Three years ago, Mary started a rural men’s mental health programme called Are You Bogged Mate? She now travels Australia visiting rural communities, talking to rural people where they feel comfortable, starting conversations and delivering a message that resonates with both men and women. Mary aims to reduce rural male suicide by breaking down the stigma, making blokes feel more understood and providing women with some insights into how blokes communicate.
