Immersion tour by wine students

In late October, in what is a truly unique wine experience, 72 Oenology students and three academic staff, from University of Adelaide, will travel to the Riverland for a two-day immersion tour. The tour is part of the curriculum exploring the region’s diverse culture of winemaking practices, philosophies, people and places.

The first day will see the students travel by boat to a stunning riverside location where they will undertake a formal wine masterclass on the banks of the mighty River Murray. Guided by, local and highly acclaimed winemaker, Eric Semmler of 919 Wines, eight wines specifically chosen will be tasted. The wines demonstrate how the Riverland is successfully shaping its future, embracing sustainable winemaking and farming both traditional and alternative grape varieties that are suited to its warm, dry climate.

Illalangi Gourmet Foods will provide a food tasting featuring a wide array of locally grown, organic and sustainable gourmet produce including: dried fruit and nuts, cheeses, bread, seeds, pates, dips, chocolates and more.

The tour will continue on the second day with the students visiting two wineries with vastly different wine making practices and output – demonstrating the diversity and significance of the Riverland to Australia’s wine industry.

First stop will be the vineyards of Whistling Kite Wines, a wine producer of alternative varieties, small batch and handcrafted wines grown and produced in authentic biodynamic style. Pam and Tony Barich, and their son Adam, will walk the visitors through the vineyards and cellar door, talking about their practices, production processes and philosophy.

The group will then travel to Berri Estates, now the Southern Hemispheres largest grape processor, and tour the brand new state of the art packaging facility and winery which represents a truly international and commercial exporting wine business of significance.

Chris Byrne, Executive Chair of Riverland Wine said, “We are incredibly excited to host the future upcoming wine makers and influencers of Australia on this unique and immersive experience of the Riverland wine region. We know that it will provide them true insight into the diverse nature of the region and what it is capable of now and in the future as it continues to build its footprint within the Australian wine scene”.
