In an evening not for the faint hearted, The Riverland Wine Show celebrated its 40th year on 20th September at Ruston’s Rose Garden, Renmark. In a show of the quality and quantities of wines the region is producing, there was a sharp increase in entries up from 250 exhibits in 2011 to 350.
“The Riverland Wine Show showcases the amazing array of wine styles and in many cases, new varieties that are produced in warm inland regions of Australia such as The Riverland” says Paul Kernich, Chairman of The Riverland Wine Show Committee. “We were really pleased with the strong and diverse representation across the competing wineries and regions, with the most successful exhibitor being Pheiffer Wines of Rutherglen”.
Other successful award recipients were DeBortoli Wines. Based in Griffith, the winery won six of the twelve trophies including the best dry red and the best alternative wine with the outstanding 2010 Deen DeBortoli Durif. Angove Family Winemakers were highly celebrated and collected trophies for the best fortified red, the NV Angove Rare Tawny and Best Brandy and the NV St Agnes XO.
Judges were also highly complimentary of the 2012 white wine exhibits with Lindeman’s Wines being awarded the trophy for Best White Wine, the 2012 Lindeman’s Bin 95 Sauvignon Blanc.
The highly acclaimed JMA Riverland Winemaker of the Year award was presented to Peter Hensell of Accolade from the Berri Winery.
“It really was an outstanding night. The venue at Ruston’s Roses was superbly presented and the Salt & Pepper Catering team served an outstanding four course meal” says Paul. “I would also like to thank The Riverland Wine Show Committee for their tireless work in organising such an exceptional event”.
