Breakfast Meetings – Feedback

All the breakfasts were superb but Barmera’s silver service effort just edged out Loxton for the ‘Best Brekky Gong’ this time around.

Reflections on the 2017 vintage were positive although those impacted heavily by the November 11 hailstorm are battening down for another really tight financial year. Keep them in mind.  The intake across the region, despite the hail losses is likely to be ‘up’ on recent years.  The welcome improvements in quality and price have lifted spirits and outlook right across the Riverland.

Senior management from the wineries, who purchase the majority of Riverland Wine grapes, were present at all meetings and all expressed positive sentiments about the Riverland Wine strategic approach firmly based on the themes of leadership, innovation, unity and pride.

The matter of the Riverland Wine Industry Fund was put first on the agenda.  Members were encouraged to consider whether the Fund Regulations should be renewed for a further five years. At the conclusion of each meeting they were all invited to respond Yes or No to the renewal question. The outcome was an overwhelming YES from each of the gatherings.  An application to the Minister will proceed in due course.  Simon Treloar, the Administrator of the Riverland Wine Industry Fund and the State and other regional funds attended the Loxton meeting.  He commended Riverland Wine for the way the fund has enabled the wine industry in this region to develop programs around Finance and data, Grape and Wine Technology and Marketing and Public Relations activities.

Recent breakfast meetings have emphasised the benefits of understanding the processes that shift the grapes from the farm gate, to the crusher, to the package, to the consumer.  These all impact the price-point a customer is willing to pay, somewhere around the globe.  The more those connections between the value of a tonne of grapes and the value of a litre of wine can be understood, the better placed we are to work together to be Australia’s preferred wine in a multitude of export destinations.  Feedback about these data information packages has been particularly strong so these will remain a feature of future meetings.

The next round is planned for late September.  At this week’s meeting of Riverland Wine it was suggested a mixture of Breakfast Meetings, Shed Meetings (with BBQ and Riverland wines to sample) might enable and encourage more members and supporters to attend.
