A fortnight ago this column featured a grim faced federal Treasurer, muscling-up. The word on the grapevine was that he was not persuaded by the industry proposal for self-funded, WET Rebate policy reform. Rather he was drawn the advice from within, that the proposed reforms would not be good for industry! In simple terms, he disagreed with the well-reasoned and powerfully supported policy reform proposal. On the strength of the grapevine hasty arrangements were made for Riverland and WFA delegates to meet Assistant Treasurer Frydenberg and last week we confirmed that indeed, the reforms would not be rolled into this year’s budget but the hot potato would be fast-tracked for debate in advance of the Tax White Paper consultations. Not good but better than an outright rebuff.
