Master of Wine, Phil Reedman showcased six Riverland wines in his masterclass, Sustainable winemaking in the Riverland, at the recent ProWein trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany.
Held this year from 18 to 20 March, ProWein is the world’s leading trade fair for wine and spirits –the largest industry meeting for professionals from viticulture, production, trade and gastronomy. Over the three days of the fair, more than 60,000 trade visitors from 133 countries viewed and sampled wines presented by over 6,870 exhibitors from 64 countries.
The Wine Australia stand, where Phil ran the masterclass, was well presented and consistently busy – a good sign for Australian wine. Masterclass wines were selected to highlight our talented Riverland community, which is committed to a philosophy of sustainability, innovation and excellence. Featuring Antiquarian Rare Field White by Byrne Vineyards, Old Vine Gorgeous Grenache by Thistledown Wine Company, Touriga Nacional by 919 Wines, Bullets Before Cannonballs by Ricca Terra Wines, Montepulciano, by Whistling Kite Biodynamic Wines and Nero D’Avola by Bassham Wines, the masterclass was well attended, demonstrating real international interest in Riverland wine. Of the attendees, only three had been to Australia and none had visited the region.
A mix of traditional and new wine varieties added a second layer of discussion and detail to the sustainability focus of the masterclass. Each of the presented wines was well received with the Thistledown Old Vine Gorgeous Grenache and Ricca Terra’s Bullets Before Cannonballs being voted the session favourites.
The next ProWein in Düsseldorf is scheduled from 17 to 19 March 2019.
