The Riverland celebrated the Australian Women in Wine Awards on Wednesday evening night at the Loxton Hotel, with two finalists and one winner in the six categories of this contest to find the most fabulous women in wine from around the country. As reported in recent weeks, Kate Strachan and Jenny Semmler were finalists in 2 of the 6 categories, Viticulturist of the year and Owner Operator of the year respectively.
Jenny, from 919 Wines was chosen by the judges as the winner of her category ahead of an incredibly high calibre field. She is the co-owner and operator of 919 Wines, a talented influencer, a tireless advocate and a true leader in the emergence of smaller producers doing unique and creative things with alternative fruit varietals. Certainly a fabulous lady of wine!
Jenny said in response to the award, ‘I would like to say thank you to my supporters as I would have never have nominated myself. Thank you to Women in Wine for recognising the role that women play in wine and thank you to my husband Eric the other half of 919 Wines.
Chris Byrne, EO of Riverland Wine declared, ‘Tuesday night was a terrific celebration for two of our Fabulous Women of Wine from the Riverland region. We look forward to other women from our region being nominated for these awards in future years and building further on this achievement.’
It is a fantastic achievement for the Riverland to have had two finalists in the women in wine awards this year. It signals that the largest wine producing in Australia is coming into its own with a shared, sustainable and innovative vision for the future.’
Congratulations Jenny and Kate from all your friends and colleagues in Australia’s most popular wine region.
