All the Riverland Wine Show Trophy winners announced during the 43rd Gala Dinner at Ruston’s Roses on Wednesday night were greeted with wild applause, none more so than David Nitschke, Manager of the Riverland Vine Improvement Committee (RVIC) when he was announced as the winner of the JMA Engineering Trophy for ‘Riverland Wine Industry – Person of the Year’.
With a passion for the vine industry, David managed the family vineyard for several years before acquiring his own vineyard. In developing the property, David found the time and energy to begin a ‘grafted vine nursery’ as well and this led to a close working relationship with the RVIC. He began working there in 1983 as Field Officer and accepted the role as Manager in 1989. He sold his vineyard in 1998 to commit full time to the detailed and demanding work of Vine Improvement. True to form, the very quietly spoken winner acknowledged his great RVIC team but we all know who the driving force is and we all know how much the region has gained from his great dedication.
Congratulations David, a true Riverland champion.
