Women Who Wine is a series of articles that celebrate Riverland women making a difference, often behind the scenes, in our region’s wine industry. We heard “on the grapevine” of a hardworking and dedicated young lady who is doing just that: Nicole Pitman, Viticulture Officer for CCW. Nicole has a passion for supporting wine grape growers in the Riverland – and we don’t mean by consuming vast amounts of delicious Riverland wine! Nicole’s role involves assisting wine grape growers with issues such as soil and irrigation management, pest and disease control and fertilisation. Establishing a positive grower-winery relationship is important to Nicole, however the interest of the grower always comes first. It’s rewarding working with growers, and helping them achieve to the best of their ability” she said. Nicole provides phone support and property visits to assist growers with concerns ranging from disease control to spray programs. Nicole’s love of the land was inspired by growing up on a fruit property in the Riverland, established by her grand-father over 100 years ago. Nicole studied Agricultural Science at the University of Adelaide, and worked in broadacre agriculture before returning to the Riverland. She lives in Renmark with her husband Shane, and three beautiful children, who love the Riverland lifestyle. “You could say it’s in my blood”, says Nicole, “and it’s nice to be specialising in Viticulture”. So Nicole, Thank you for sharing your story in ‘Women Who Wine’ – we raise our glasses to you! Your efforts are not going unnoticed, and certainly helping to make the Riverland wine industry the best it can be!!
